Different types and classes of concrete give architects almost unlimited design possibilities. However, transferring paper ideas to the building requires changing the traditional concrete mix for this special purpose mix.
Concrete is the best material
Concrete is a very popular material. Currently, no architect can imagine the design of buildings and other things without this material. The basic components of concrete are hydraulic binder, aggregate and water. The binder, that is cement or cement with mineral additives, after mixing with water, forms a leaven which, due to the physico-chemical reactions, harden and causes binding of the mixture. Water, in addition to providing the ability to bind cement, also gives the mixture the appropriate consistency. Aggregate (ie sand or gravel) is a filling material, and its fractions are selected depending on the required characteristics of the concrete. These three main components dosed in the right proportions allow to create concrete of a specific class and density.
However, their possibilities end there. Normal concrete is strong but heavy at the same time. You can not put it in the winter. The heterogeneous structure of the mix makes it stratify, it is difficult to arrange, and after hardening it often breaks. In addition, rising prices of materials (especially reinforcing steel), increasing pressure on ecology and finally striving to make concrete a decorative material are often too high requirements for ordinary reinforced concrete.
Can concrete architecture solutions be used to restore… old buildings?
So the producers started promoting special-purpose concretes containing chemical admixtures and mineral additives. They affect primarily the rheological properties of the mix, such as shrinkage, fluidity and workability. As a result, it is possible to improve the technical features of the concrete or to reduce, for example, its weight, setting time or the required reinforcement rate, optimally for a specific application. You can include, among others, GRC concrete. It is fiberglass-reinforced concrete with which you can renew old buildings. It is very durable and also resistant to various weather conditions.
